Developing the ship supply system.

Hey, guys!

Sometimes my work goes really interesting. For example, now we were making the ship’s supply system and we need to look through a lot of sources to make it realistic. You all know that ship need food and water, sometimes rum, but who personally deals with this task? For me, it was a surprise. A Cook. On small ships, he has been doing this work alone.

Let’s go through this job sometimes called Steward. Duties may vary from nation to nation, but on the whole, it was the same. The ship Cook was responsible for feeding the crew and food supply. First of all, a real Cook was an experienced sailor. Secondly, he was able to cut meat carcass properly, knew the rules of food storing and he could cook the food accurately. During the port visits, the Cook must buy the supplies with the most strong sailors on the local market and watch after the amount of provision as it was his duty to provide food through the whole sail.⛵️

All the crew depend on these skills. If the Cook was bad, it was a disaster. When sanitary conditions are poor and water is salty, it was highly important to eat enough. Very often cook on the ship was a very odious figure and on pirate ships sometimes the crew could throw the Cook off the ship if they didn’t like the food, but often it wasn’t the solution for the problem. During the sailing Cook on big ships had from 4 to 6 assistants and they were working all day long because they had to serve meals to different shifts. They were cooking in special stoves that prevent the wooden ship from a fire. Cooks were involved in battles as all other crew, especially on pirate ships.⚓️
